Hey hey hey! What’s up, drumming fellas?

So, today we’re gonna talk about something cool – how to read drum scores. Yeah, I know it might sound like rocket science to some of you, but trust me, it’s not that difficult once you get the hang of it.

First off, let’s take a look at this image I found on drummingbasics.com. It shows a sample drum score, with all the different symbols and notations. Looks like a lot of stuff, right? Well, don’t panic! We’re gonna break it down, step by step.

In the drum score, each drum has its own line – the snare, the bass drum, the hi-hat, etc. – and each note or beat is represented by a symbol. For example, a filled-in circle indicates a bass drum hit, while an X symbol means the hi-hat is closed. Easy enough, right?

But wait, there’s more! Some symbols have modifiers that change their meaning. For instance, an X with a line or accent above it means you hit the hi-hat extra hard. A filled-in circle with a small x inside it represents a ghost note on the snare drum – a quiet, off-beat hit that adds some flavor to your groove. And there are plenty more of these modifiers to learn!

So, now that we’ve got the basics down, let’s move on to this other image I dug up from hhpb.org. It’s a drum score for the Highland Cathedral, a classic Scottish tune that features some sweet snare drum rolls and a booming bass drum beat.

As you can see, the drum score is pretty complex, with lots of different symbols and notations. But don’t worry, we’re not gonna play the whole thing – just the first few bars. Check out the images below.

Now, let’s break it down even further. In the first bar, we’ve got a basic snare hit on the “and” of beat 2, followed by a flam – a quick double hit, with one stick landing just before the other. Then, we’ve got another snare hit on beat 3, and a kick drum hit on beat 4.

The second bar is where things start to get interesting. We’ve got a snare roll – a quick succession of hits, alternating between left and right hands – that starts on the “e” of beat 2 and continues until the “and” of beat 3. This is followed by a loud crash cymbal hit on beat 4, symbolized by a big X with a circle around it.

In the third bar, we’ve got a variation of the snare roll, starting on the “and” of beat 1 and going until the “e” of beat 3. Then, we’ve got a couple of bass drum hits on beats 3 and 4.

And in the fourth bar, we’ve got a classic rock beat – a snare hit on beat 2, followed by a bass drum hit on beat 3, and another snare hit on beat 4.
