Notation of Duration

The notation of duration is simply a representation of how long a note is played. In drum notation, the different symbols used to indicate duration include:

As you can see, each symbol represents a specific duration, ranging from whole notes (four beats) to sixteenth notes (one beat divided into four equal parts). It’s important to understand the length of each note so you can accurately play along with the music.

Playing in Time

Playing in time is one of the most important aspects of being a drummer. In order to play in time, you must have a solid understanding of rhythm and tempo. Tempo refers to the speed at which the music is played, and is indicated by the number of beats per minute (BPM).

When reading sheet music for drums, you must pay close attention to the time signature. The time signature tells you how many beats are in each measure and which type of note gets the beat. For example, a common time signature in music is 4/4, which means there are four beats in each measure and the quarter note gets the beat.
